Swimwear for 2009

by on May 1, 2009

trends from years gone by are making a comeback for 2009, from the disco-infused looks that made the 70s, to the flashy, bold prints of the 80s.  The Far East also provides some styling cues for this year’s swimsuit trends.  Before summer, be sure to pick up a new, stylish swimsuit!

Gone are the Brazilian cuts and thongs of past seasons.  In 2009, it’s really all about the one piece.  These styles prove that you don’t have to be overexposed to be sexy.

If you’re not self-confident enough to wear a bikini, but you still want to show some skin while you’re at the beach, then a cutaway one-piece might be right for you.  These suits usually have a cutaway at the waist.  These styles are great for keeping covered up, but they are still very trendy.

If you really want to “let it all hang out”, then a cutaway bikini is just the suit for your needs.  The cut-away bikini leaves out parts in order to show a little more skin, and reveal those curves.  It’s sort of like a string bikini, all grown up. These suits reveal quite a bit of skin in the chest area, or along the hips.  Hot colors in this style are pink, aqua blue, black, and white.  Why should you choose a cutaway bikini?   It provides sex appeal.  Anyone can wear a bikini, and flaunt what they have, but a cut-away bikini will display those curves that you’re so proud of.  Whether you want to show off your stomach muscles or your long legs, the cutaway bikini is perfectly suited for those with toned, lean bodies.

Taking its cue from the dress trends of the summer season, the single strap one-piece is heating up the fashion runways. These styles are popular in shades of red, basic black, or perhaps a floral print, and they add a little class to the everyday one-piece.

The “monokini” is also available in a halter style, which is great to accentuate the chest, arms, and shoulders.  With most of these suits, the top is attached to the bottom by a chain or some other kind of strap.  The look is equal parts cut-away and bikini.  This style allows those who are toned and tan to show off all their hard work with an edgy, asymmetrical design.

For those who want to remain modest, while still being stylish and having fun, the tankini can be bought with a matching skirt, which will allow you to sunbathe and swim while remaining semi-covered.  Popular designs are animal or floral prints, and bold solid colors.

However, if you’re so inclined, and just out to have some fun, take a styling hint from all those college spring-breakers and choose a bikini with side ties and triangle cups in a bold color such as hot pink, turquoise blue, or maybe even an animal print like zebra or leopard.

With all the new trends in swimsuits for 2009, the hardest part will be deciding which hot new swimsuit to wear first!

Trends come and go, but there are certain wardrobe pieces that are always timeless. Those pieces are something every woman should have in her closet, because having those basic, timeless and classic pieces available to you means you not only will always have something to wear that will always look great, you can also work in the trendier items as you like, using your basics as a foundation.

Since these chic pieces are never going to go out of style, you can wear them forever, and that means you should buy quality examples of each. You do not need to spend outlandish amounts of money, of course, but spend more to get something that is well-made so it really will last you forever.

1.) The Little Black Dress. The LBD is a closet staple no woman should be without. Find one that fits you perfectly, and this basic dress can look different every time depending on what accessories and shoes you add.

2.) A white button down shirt/blouse. Great with jeans and sandals, great with a black skirt and heels, the white button down goes with everything. Find one that is fitted and flatters your figure to avoid looking boxy.

3.) A great pair of jeans. Find a pair with a dark wash, a medium rise, and a boot cut that hits the top of your foot so you can wear them with heels or flats.

4.) A great pair of black trousers. Again, go for a medium rise, in cotton with a hint of stretch. Straight legged trouser cuts flatter nearly everyone and can be dressed up or down, making these pants extremely versatile.

5.) A basic trench. Find a fitted trench coat in black, tan, or another neutral color. The trench is suitable for all climates and always looks chic.

6.) A pair of black heels. Every woman should own at least one pair of heels, and if you can only own one pair (crazy!), they should be a basic black pair that will go with everything. Look for something with an almond toe (not too pointy, not too round), a 3 inch (or more, if you like more) heel, and make sure they are well made and comfortable to wear. This is definitely one of the places where it’s necessary to spend a little more – a good, well-made pair of heels can make the difference between you looking fabulous walking down the street and you just hobbling down the street.

7.) A ballet flat. Get a good flat in black or brown that can be worn with skirts, jeans, and trousers.

8.) A classic bag. A good purse in black or brown will go with anything. Find one that is well made, and has a comfortable drop (“drop” refers to the strap length in relation to the bag itself when you put the bag over your shoulder).

9.) A silk scarf. A scarf can be worn in your hair, around your neck, around your waist, tied onto your handbag, threaded through your belt loops and about 5 million other ways, depending on how creative you are. It is an extremely versatile accessory.

10.) A great pair of sunglasses. Look for a pair of shades that flatter your face, in black or tortoise, depending on your personal style. Either will match everything so you can’t go wrong.

The most important things to keep in mind while you are shopping for your great basics is cut and fit. Make sure everything you buy fits YOU perfectly, so it really will be a piece you can wear for years, and don’t forget to go for quality and well-made items.

In this economy we must find good reasons to go shopping, and there are always some things, key fashion pieces that we are always willing to and should splurge on. Because people always want to look and feel good , they will continue to shop but will say no to impulse buys and look for more timely pieces of high quality that will last. Women will buy less, but better! So, because we are looking to make our wardrobes recession proof, what should we focus on buying? Well, first of all we should recycle our style. This means investing in a few high quality pieces that you can use over and over again. Second, when you are out shopping and you see a piece of clothing that you feel you will die without, stop and make a mental list of all of the different occasions you can wear it to. If you can only think of one, consider buying something else that you will get more use out of. Third, and don’t think of it as trading down, we should be drawn more to outstanding design than obvious status symbols. Fortunately, there are many trendy stores with cute designer tops at affordable prices that we can pair with our key high quality fashion pieces. So, whether your key piece this season is a fabulous tailored jacket, pair of aggressive shoes that will change the tone of everything in your wardrobe, outsize drop earrings that will transform last season’s outfit, or a beautiful ruffled blouse to wear with anything and everything, just remember there are no rules anymore!, go bold instead of dainty, and don’t be afraid to bring your own style and personality to your look!

Fashion for the Petite Girl

by on March 16, 2009

Petite women often have a hard time finding clothing that flatters them and fits them well. Being short and having a small frame means you can sometimes be overwhelmed by your clothing, and no one wants that. Fortunately, with a few basic guidelines under your belt, you will be able to dress to impress, regardless of how tiny you are!

Make friends with a tailor. Whether it’s your mother or a friend that knows how to sew or a professional tailor, having someone that is able to alter your clothes to suit your body will make all the difference. It is often difficult for petite women to find clothing off the rack that fits perfectly, but having some adjustments made will make those pieces fit perfectly for you.

Heels are your friend. A good heel or wedge will help elongate your legs. Choose ones that are comfortable to wear and similar in color to the fabric of your pants to keep the illusion of a longer leg going. Flats can and will look cute, too, but if you are looking to make your legs longer, heels are where it’s at.

When choosing juniors dresses and skirts, make sure they hit a little above or below the knee. Cutting your legs off directly at the knee with the hem of a skirt tends to make your legs look stumpy. For pants and jeans, the cut that most often flatters petite women are those with a mid to low rise and a straight cut on the leg. Straight legged jeans elongate your lower half.

With tops, from t-shirts to sweaters, go for a V neck or a scoop neck to give you the illusion of a longer neck. Wrap styles in dresses and tops will ensure that your clothes are fitted to your torso and help you avoid looking boxy or overwhelmed by too much fabric.

Some careful shopping with an eye towards fit and cut and the help of a good tailor when you need it, you will soon be dressing your petite frame to really show it off!

Jeans vs The Little Black Dress!

by on March 12, 2009

Jeans are definitely a wardrobe staple for every woman nowadays. They can be dressed up or dressed down, cute and casual or sexy and ready for a night on the town, which makes them great to have around for their versatility, but might mean you have neglected that most feminine of all clothing items – the dress.

Chances are that you have a Little Black Dress in your closet (and if you don’t, you should!), but if you don’t have some other dresses in there, you are missing out on some great fashion opportunities. A dress is fun and flirty, and an instant outfit. You don’t have to match a top with a bottom when you’re wearing a dress, you can just throw it on and go.

Choose dresses in fun patterns, and to have some extra versatile choices in your closet, choose dresses in solid colors other than black that you can accessorize to dress up or down as necessary. Wrap dresses are extremely flattering on all body shapes and sizes, as they accentuate the narrowest part of your frame. Don’t go too short and don’t go too tight, and you will have a ton of options to wear that aren’t blue jeans next time you open the closet door and look for something to put on.
